Block Craft Idea: Tealight Holder

This tea light table stand combines natural materials with creative DIY. Step by step, using craft blocks and self-cast blocks, you’ll create a decorative eye-catcher with a modern, “ nature-” look. The combination of a warm wood look and unique cast elements creates a cozy atmosphere and makes the table stand a stylish decorative piece for any season.

For this decorative idea, in addition to natural wooden blocks, you’ll also need white blocks that you’ll cast yourself and incorporate into your craft project. The tea light table decoration consists of a base plate and a decorative sign that’s about 16 cm high, which you can inscribe with your own personal message.

Set up your workspace so you can work efficiently: mixing cup, mixing stick, VBS KeraHobby casting compound, casting mold, some “ sandpaper, ” glue, pen, graphite paper, wooden blocks, template, and a chain of light.

Put 200 g of casting powder into the mixing cup and add 65 g of water. Stir the mixture thoroughly until it is smooth and creamy. This step is important to ensure that your cast craft blocks will be sturdy later on and won’t have any crumbly spots.

Pour the mixture into the mold and remove any air bubbles
Pour the casting mixture into the mold. Then tap the mold lightly so that any air bubbles trapped in the mixture rise to the surface and disappear. This will result in cleaner edges and a significantly higher-quality finish.

Let it dry and carefully remove from the mold
Let the casting mixture dry for about 30–45 minutes. Then carefully remove the blocks from the mold. If you do this gently, the corners and narrow ridges will remain intact, and you’ll have less cleanup to do.

Smooth the edges and let them dry completely
Smooth the edges with a little “ sandpaper. ” This makes the edges feel pleasant to the touch and ensures the blocks can be glued together cleanly later. Then let them dry thoroughly for about 1–2 hours so the moisture can escape from the inside.

Glue the cast blocks together to form sturdy elements
Glue two of your homemade blocks together along the long, narrow side. This creates thicker “beams” that are well-suited for a decorative sign and won’t tip over or warp as easily.

Transfer the lettering template and trace the lines
Print out a template with your chosen words and transfer it to the blocks using graphite paper. Graphite paper works like carbon paper: You trace the lettering, and the lines are transferred to the material. Then trace over the lines with a pen so that the lettering is clearly legible and visually stands out in the center.

Build the frame for the sign
For the side struts, glue two blocks together along the short, narrow side to create two longer pieces, each about 16 cm long. Place them parallel to each other. Now glue the cast and wooden blocks across them as “slats.” Leave some space between the slats: you’ll use these gaps later to thread the wire from the chain of light through. Leave a bit of space at the bottom as well so you can securely place the sign in the stand later.
Let the sign dry completely before moving it. This ensures the glue holds securely, and the individual craft blocks stay neatly aligned.

Building the Base Plate / Foot
Place two blocks parallel to each other and glue additional blocks crosswise, standing on end, on top of them. To ensure even spacing, first fill the entire surface with blocks. Then glue every other block in place. This creates even “slots” into which you can later place the sign in any gap you like. Finally, remove the loose blocks and let the base dry completely.

Insert the sign and arrange the chain of light
Once everything is dry, insert the sign into the last slot on the base plate. Wrap the chain of light around the blocks and thread the wire through the gaps so that the light looks neat and tidy. Glue the battery compartment to the back of one of the blocks or place it discreetly on the back of the base.

Decorate and create an atmospheric display
Place an “ glass for tea lights ” in front of the sign and add a sprig of “ eucalyptus. ” This way, your craft project will serve as a small, glowing decorative highlight for a sideboard, windowsill, or shelf—all year round and suitable for many interior styles.
