1. Preparing the blocks of casting slip
First, prepare the casting clay blocks. Mix about four tablespoons of casting powder with water until you have a creamy mixture. Pour this into the silicone mould and leave to dry for around 45 minutes. As soon as the blocks have taken on a firm shape, carefully remove them from the mold. Smooth the edges by gently sanding them down and leave the blocks to dry completely for another 12 hours.
2. Creating the frames
Once your blocks are ready, it's time to create the frames. Take four blocks of your choice (whether wooden, acrylic or made from casting slip) and glue them flat on a solid surface to form a square. This forms a frame. Each light frame construction requires two such frames, so repeat the process for the second frame. Make sure to allow the glued joints to dry thoroughly.
3. Building the body
Four blocks are also needed for the body, i.e. the inner part of the light frame. However, glue them together upright to form a square to create a stable body. In our example, we have used wooden blocks for this step, but the choice is entirely up to you. Allow the body to dry thoroughly to ensure stability.
4. Setting the chain of light and attaching the battery compartment
Now the chain of light comes into play! Use hot glue to attach the chain of light inside the body. You can align the lights either criss-cross or straight - just as you like. Don't forget to attach the battery compartment to the outside of the frame so that the battery remains easily accessible.
5. Designing the pinwheel foil
Now cut the pinwheel foil so that it fits exactly into your frame. To decorate the foil, cut a quarter out of a napkin and remove the unprinted layers. Apply a thin layer of napkin varnish to the foil and carefully place the napkin on top. Apply another coat of varnish and allow the film to dry.
6. Assembling the light frame
Once the decorative film is completely dry, stick it into the frames. Then carefully attach the two frames to the body to complete your light frame.
